A Chilly Thanksgiving; Possible Flakes, Too

November 19th, 2009 at 8:08 pm by Don Paul under Weather Watch 4

A long-advertised cooling trend is still shaping up for the middle and latter part of Thanksgiving week.  While there are no signs of true arctic air reaching us, temperatures will drop below normal as we get into Wednesday night and Thanksgiving Day.  Some Shwrs may mix with wet snow Wednesday night, and indications point to a Raw Thanksgiving holiday with some Rain & Snow Shwrs that could even turn to all snow before the day is out.  Temperatures look marginal for any significant lake effect snow at this point, but a slight shift in the orientation of the polar branch of the jetstream could makes things interesting.

Today’s indices still show the AO going sharply negative, most members of the NAO ensemble seem somewhat more strongly negative in a few days than yesterday’s run. But the majority of ensemble members for the PNA show a positive index for early in the month but a trend back to neutrality or even somewhat negative/warm by mid-December. That is a decided change from yesterday’s run.

Well, nothing we can do about it, this winter is just going to be tough to realize. Don how about tonight and early am tomorrow? Any rain or showers of any consequence? Heading out to the streams for some steelhead and wondering how it will be. Thanks Don.

Still working on my forecast; it won’t be pouring, but it will get progressively more raw by AM. More at 10.

Snowing in the Jamestown area, sticking in the hills just to the South of the city of Jamestown. Not a lot of snow, but it’s sticking…

No snow anywhere in sight here.. not that I expected it… I do have very alive and vibrant Geraniums still growing in flower pots in the front of my house. I wonder if they will still be around for Christmas…
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! :)

    Don,
What would the result be around here with a negative NAO, strongly negative AO, but neutral or slightly negative PNA? Still cold enough to snow?
