No quick fix for Bills

October 12th, 2009 at 5:13 pm by John Murphy under News 4 Buffalo Sports

A week ago, I did a commentary saying that firing the head coach would not make that much of a difference for the Buffalo Bills; it would not make things much better this season.

But yesterday’s terrible loss to Cleveland makes it an even tougher call.

This has not changed-firing Dick Jauron will not turn this team around and spark a magical run to a playoff spot. Their problems—offensive ineptitude..lack of depth..a quarterback in crisis..are way too serious to envision that. The best reason to change coaches at this point would be to send a signal to the fans–the loyal Bills fans, who filled the stadium again yesterday..and the hundreds of thousands of others who listened to and watched the game. They’re looking for a sign …they’re looking for an acknowledgement from Bills management that games like yesterday’s..like the Miami game a week ago..are not acceptable. They’re looking for hope.

Would changing coaches provide that hope? Temporarily, yeah. But the Bills problems are deep-seated and serious. It’s going to take a major overhaul to get the team straightened out and in contention again. It’ll take a lot more than a “feel-good” firing designed to appease the fans.

Rather than offering up the coach to mollify the fans, I’d love to see the Bills take a serious look at where they are in the football department..and where they’re headed. I’d like to see real change..not knee-jerk reaction. And I’d like to see that thorough assessment of their football team begin now..not in January.

What do you think?

Actually, I think firing the head coach and replacing him with the RIGHT coach would do wonders for this team. Sure there are deeper problems then the coach (the scouting dept. has another bust in Maybin) but if you got a guy in here like Gruden with a personality and some fire in his belly (see Denver’s coach or Mike Singletary as cheaper examples), the team would be 100 times better and would be less likely to lose 6-3 to the Cleveland Browns.

I think fans “might” feel a little better about losing if the team went down swinging and the coach showed some emotion.

But Ralph won’t make changes because the stadium is full every Sunday. Until people stop coming, there’s nothing wrong in Ralph’s mind.

Every time the Bill’s loose, everyone is quick to judge the coach. I doubt their coach told them to do the dumb things that they do. Is it to much to think that these players are just not that great, get paid way to much and what is up with all the injuries? Hold back their pay until they win and I bet they become a better team.

Even if the players are overrated and overpaid the coaching staff and front office hired these guys and are responsible for the successes and failures.

It starts at the top. The General Manager and head coach allowed too many inexperienced offensive lineman start. A more savy GM OR Head coach would never let that happen. Even though the Bills line is inexperienced, most of the lack of production falls squarely on the trigger mans lap…the Quarter back. Edwards has fallen into the JP Lossman mode…had their bells rung and are afraid to look down the field for anyone open. You can’t have a productive offense when your quarterbacks are playing scared and are allowed to pass for short gaines. Playing with NO confidence…No play action, no
    fake pumps and short drops.

All I can say is that there is NO WAY Edwards should resume the QB position when healed. Let’s see, I believe he got the job when JP was hurt. Edwards has been HORRIBLE. Give Fitzpatrick the job, he’s earned it already.
