The Tornadoes Are Over but the Malady Lingers On
Still another in a long series of unsettled weeks coming up. The upper trough continues to be in a favorable position to send a series of short waves in our direction, after such an active severe weather day on Saturday and somewhat less active day on Sunday. Early indicators don’t show much in the way of severe weather potential this week, but hydrological issues may come into play with such saturated soils and high-running creeks. Even the 2 days which looked to be essentially dry back on Friday–Monday and Tuesday–have modest chances for isolated convection, with more widespread activity developing on Wednesday, and another disturbance getting here on Friday. Tuesday will include a warming trend with some downsloping to begin with. However, it’s harder to heat the boundary layer when the soil is so wet. At least an early look ahead to next weekend–while not a lock–looks mostly promising.
up to 86 in Amherst

Tornado warning posted a few minutes ago for the city of Guelph, Ontario–just west of Toronto.
There had been a tornado warning for parts of the Greater Toronto area—Brampton/Mississauga. Now a severe thunderstorm warning. Looks like some heavy weather moving into Toronto
Radar is not working on WIVB! Was looking for the storm responsible for Barrie1ont post and radar showing nothing up to 2:03pm?
Based on what is forming to the Northwest, we could be in for a nasty late afternoon/evening, with that squall line starting to develop and moving to the SE. I read about the tornado warnings around Toronto, just wondering if this line of t-storms is going to strengthen as it hits our area since we appear to have some of the ingredients in place for convection (i.e. warm temps, high humidity, winds).
The temp hasn’t gone above 83F on my thermometer, strange how Amherst has been a whopping 5-6F warmer today (I saw 89F for the wunderground link for Amherst). Either way, this heat could translate into some rough weather if that squall line continues to develop as it moves our way…
Hey Thinksnow

click on radar and click on King City radar.
Just t-storm watch for gta and our region, but tornado warning for lindsay/haliburton–a good hour plus northeast of toronto and east of us. lots of cottagers in that area.
warning for toronto cancelled, but storm moving out over lake ontario.
got to go back to work. good luck with the radar.
Ah, That is nasty! Thanks barrie1ont!
More tornado warnings posted for southwestern Ontario–places like Brantford, Guelph and Woodstock. Second of the day for Guelph.
We have a crackerjack storm to the north of us(15 min away), where t-storm watches are posted.
Don’t know if this is the front firing up these storms or all the daytime heating. Despite the hit and miss storms, no shortage of bursts of sunshine either!
Toronto got heavy rain and hail.
Lindsay,
How does Saturday look at this early point? Is there a chance that it could turn out to be a good beach day, or will it atleast be mostly cloudy even if it doesn’t rain most of the day?
Thanks!
Hi Barrie1, it’s a combo of the front AND the daytime heating. What a great day to have been at the cottage; lots of strong cells crossing Lake Simcoe with the strong probability of more to come before the front finally moves south.
Glad I’m off! Been very busy the last few days on what has been a vacation which has been anything but vacationlike, but it should get better by Friday.
Looks like my Friday July 31 (10:06pm) post on possible svr threat for today worked out all too well.
Tx HowieH. Missed out in the action around here but Orillia area got some decent thunderstorms earlier this afternoon. Flooding rains in western sections of the Greater Toronto Area.
Off on holidays for 10 days beginning Friday afternoon. Heading to the eastern shores of Lake Huron. With muggy and hot weather forecast for Sunday/Monday, fingers crossed for a good ol fashioned light show to come across Lake Huron—preferably at night. Boy, are those storms spectacular to watch.
Enjoy your holidays Don.
Barrie1, have a great time and catch a few of what some people call the world’s best sunsets! I’m just taking a break from shooting the storm passing north of Toronto; look’s like the cold fronts last gasp!
Juju… Saturday as far as temperatures go will be in the L80s…so I would say that is good beach weather. Also, humidity levels will be on the higher side by that point. But there is the chance of a hit or miss shower or T-storm. It won’t be ENTIRELY rainfree….but I think you’ll have plenty of dry time to enjoy the beach. This is my “early” forecast. Stay tuned.
Didnt get a drop of rain here. Believe it or not, I’m watering the lawn because its getting brownish. I’m watching the radar take the storms to the North…Dry day here in Cheektowaga with a serious case of the muggies.
I think we’re about to get hit in my area, we seem to be in the direct path of those t-storms, unless wind shear or the lake decides to snuff them out as they cross the peninsula (which happens quite often!).
Thanks again Lindsay.
my parents live in springville. At 2pm heavy rain thunder and lightning. Funnel cloud spotted…. flash floods 2.5 ft deep in the roads. Tree’s up-rooted. as big as 3 foot in diameter.. no doubt in mind with top wind gust at my parents house reaching 87 mph a tornado in sprinville that followed rt. 240. God bless to all that helped local community out.
Is their any truth to a tornado touching down in Rushford, N.Y. yestewrday, and if so where?
What is with 2 tornadoes in Allegany within just a week or 2 ? Now suddenly the word downpour is being used for rain, since I classify a downpour as a rain where high speed wipers are not fast enough just like sunday. If we do get a downpour again we will have more flooding in Sunset Bay & Silver Creek.
Tornado was in New Hudson/Black Creek in the State forest land, near the border of Rushford. Laid flat a path of trees before skipping accross the New Hudson valley over State Route 305 and hitting Jackson Hill rd. At least one car was crushed in a driveway near there.
Spotted a possible tornado in great valley around 2:35pm EST time
