This is only a test…

May 19th, 2009 at 1:41 pm by Dennis Majewicz under TV Tech Talk

WIVB and WNLO, as well as the other Buffalo TV stations still broadcasting in analog, will participate in a voluntary series of tests to run this Thursday, May 21st at several times during the day. Actually “test” is not a relevant term anymore. These are really long form announcements meant to raise awareness of the need to check your readiness for theĀ end of analog broadcasting on June 12, less than a month away.

As in past “tests”, a visual graphic, along with a voice announcement, will air on analog channels only. If you see the announcement and are using an antenna to watch television, you are likely not ready for the digital conversion. (There are circumstances where you will legitimately see the announcement such as if you are watching our analog channel on your HD TV set. However, since you have an HD set, you are ready for the transition. If you are confused about seeing the announcement but think you are ready, don’t hesitate to ask questions here or call the station.)

Look for the tests at 7:28 AM, 12:28 PM and at 6:28 PM.

Why aer they running that stupid message for 30 minutes in the middle of the picture? Run it at the top or bottom please!!!

  2. chris says:

Are they gonna do this message a few more times in the next couple of weeks in case some people are missing it?

  3. Dennis Majewicz says:

The message was designed to get the attention of those watching. Hopefully people who use an antenna for reception and haven’t done anything to prepare for the end of analog noticed it as well.

This is the last “test” as I understand it. There will still be informational crawls at various intervals and 30 second announcements as well as a special 30 minute show on Sunday, May 24th.

I live on the escarpment above Fredonia and I will not be
viewing ch 4 after June 12. My best analog channel will
become unreceivable as it becomes digital…I think there
are very many in my area with the same situation.
Channel 24, WNLO, comes in great with a strong signal…
the programing is NOT great…I’ll watch the news at 10 pm.
Signal strength on ch 4 is 10 to 20 percent digital.
    Farewell, R

  5. Richard,

If you’re on top of the escarpment you should be able to receive WIVB and the other locals without much trouble. You may have to improve your antenna but you’re less than 40 miles from our towers and that is certainly within range of a decent antenna.
