A recent item in the Boston Globe is proof that the Bills MUST draft Jason Peter’s replacement early in the draft. As we point out in our review of the Bills draft needs, finding a left tackle should be the Bills highest priority.
The Globe item states that of the ten teams that allowed the fewest sacks in 2008, all ten had a left tackle drafted in the first or second round. Seven of the team were first round picks. This tells me that if you want to protect your quarterback, you better get a stud left tackle and you better get him early. This should tell the Bills that they better use the 11th or 28th pick on a replacement for Peters.
Here’s the list of those ten teams and their left tackles:
1. Denver 12 sacks allowed (Ryan Clady, 1st round)
2. Tennessee 12 sacks (Michael Roos, 2nd round)
3. New Orleans 13 sacks (Jamal Brown, 1st round)
4. Indianapolis 14 sacks (Tony Ugoh, 2nd round)
5. Atlanta 17 sacks (Sam Baker, 1st round)
6. Carolina 20 sacks (Jordan Gross, 1st round)
7. Philadelphia 23 sacks (Tra Thomas, 1st round)
8. Cleveland 24 sacks (Joe Thomas, 1st round)
9. San Diego 25 sacks (Marcus McNeil, 2nd round)
10. Miami 26 sacks (Jake Long, 1st round)
I think the Bills have to use the 11th pick on a left tackle, assuming Andre Smith or Michael Oher is available. If not, they better use the 28th pick on an Eben Britton or William Beatty. We’ll find out Saturday.
