Lake Effect Snow Potential is Going, Going…but Not Gone

January 15th, 2009 at 7:35 pm by Don Paul under Weather Watch 4

As of this morning, Lake Erie (based on GOES East satellite imagery) appeared to be about 75% covered in varying consistencies of ice–some slushy and loose, some packed and dense.  The largest area of open water is in the SE quadrant of the lake well offshore.  There certainly is enough open water for moderate to hvy lake snow to persist Well South of the metro area tonight into Friday night.  The icing process has inevitably accelerated in this very cold pattern and will continue at a fast pace the next several days.  The Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect late Thur night through most of Friday, with the wind chill values mostly in the minus teens by Friday morning, and occasionally flirting with -20 (unless winds strengthen more than currently modeled and observed upwind).

    Hi Don,
Just a quick question how do you the buffalo public schools determine whether to closed, when its a snow storm watch or snow storm warning or how much of an accumalations does it have to be? I will be at work tomorrow and my children will be in school taking exams, unless they close school I just wanted to know for future references. Thank You!
