Welcome, Folks!

December 1st, 2008 at 6:40 pm by Don Paul under Weather Watch 4

A quick welcome, as our New Blog is now online.  Just in time for an interesting week of weather.

As you see from the previous post by Chris Woodard, bloggers will be required to enter their email address in order to post.  This is a security step and, hopefully, we won’t have to invoke other security barriers we have at our disposal.

I’ll have a post pertaining to our roller coaster pattern a little later this evening.

Don

    They’re there, check them out.

  2. Sled Hill John says:

    Hay Devin,
Just wondering if you got those pics of last years hill?
    John

  3. Devin says:

    John,

I got your pics and that sled hill looks very very cool. For some reason it won’t let me save your pictures because they are not in jpeg format and they are in a java script/adobe reader. If you want to go to http://www.photoshop.com , you can make yourself an account, and upload the pictures yourself.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  4. Sled Hill John says:

    Mark,
I thought the basic idea of a blog is to talk to people with similar interests as yourself. In this case, weather. A limited number of posts would make it tough to have a dialogue with someone. Wouldn’t you agree??

    John

  5. Sled Hill John says:

    Devin,

Thanks for trying. I’ll try that. I think it’s worth sharing with all of these snow lovers.

    John

  6. Devin says:

Definitely. That has to be the coolest looking thing I’ve ever seen.Keep up the good work ;)

    Devin,

Watch the language man, this is the best time of the year in buffalo for weather and the last thing you want is to be banished from the blog. Don’t let anything get to you and keep enjoying the cool people who continue to discuss the weather and many other fascinating topics. Your too good for this blog to be removed.

  8. Sled Hill John says:

The picture with the kids is not as tall as the side view.

  9. Sled Hill John says:

    Devin,

I agree with thinksnow08. We don’t want to loose you man.

  10. Devin says:

Sorry guys. You all know how it is when your a teen.

I’ll watch my language from here on out.

  11. Thinksnow08 says:

Looks like we are not going into a great winter pattern over the next 14 days. Ups and downs, and towards the mid month looks like more wet than white.
I think we are going to struggle this year to have even a decent winter at least in terms of snow accumulation north of the southern tier. Anyone with any thoughts?

  12. Sled Hill John says:

I don’t know as much about the weather as you guys, but it has been frustrating seeing the so. tier getting all the white stuff, and at the same time, our lake is getting colder.

But all it takes is one big event. Even if it’s after x-mas. If we do get it, you northtowners can all come sledding on my hill. It’s as fun if not more than The Ridge. And an easier walk back to the top.

  13. Thinksnow08 says:

Ok, My life is on an emotional weather roller coaster right now. I was just watching live the weekly planner on the weather channel, and the met mentions and he says that with this type of info you take with a grain of salt, but the outlook past 14 days has th POSIBILITY of a MAJOR cold outbreak just before the X-mas holiday….This year is going to drive me nuts and we aren’t even in actual winter yet!

  14. Juju the cat says:

Thinksnow, it is five days away, however, as of right now at least the surface winds look to be sw for the whole day friday with very cold temps. The nws hourly weather graph also shows a likely chance of snow during that period.

  15. Juju the cat says:

I’m sure the forecast will change many times before we hit friday, but at least for now you can be on a high of the weather roller coaster!

  16. Devin says:

I think anything past 180 hours out on the models is just a game of guessing. Even within 180 hours the models like t do their usual changing especially with big storms. I’m not buying into any type of storm/pattern past next weekend.

  17. Devin says:

I can’t believe how cold it is.My thermometer says 7.9 degrees. and with the wind blowing between 10-15 mph it feels well below zero.

  19. Juju the cat says:

Devin, what do you think about this friday? Another shot of cold air comes in for thursday and then the surface winds become sw by friday early morning. I don’t know about the winds aloft though. There could be warmer air aloft moving in for friday. Also, there could be high pressure by then, meaning drier air. Any thoughts, hopefully some lake effect potential?

  20. Thinksnow08 says:

    We couldn’t be THAT lucky…

  21. Sled Hill John says:

I don’t call this home field advantage. We need to be playing Miami in this Arctic air mass.

  22. barrie1ont says:

Bittery cold in Toronto. Shame the dome is closed.

I’ve been to a few Bills game—and you fans know how to party and enjoy football in the great outdoors—even in winter. That’s the way the game is meant to be played.

Anything more about potential for snow/rain Monday night and portion of Tuesday? 2 to 4 inches of snow forecast for our region, and maybe rain for Toronto part of Tuesday. How does it look for WNY?

    Go Bills!

  23. Devin says:

As for the lake effect potential next week. It’s still too early to be speculating where and how much. Right now 850 temps look to be between -12C dropping to about -20C which is plenty sufficient to produce lake effect snow. As it looks right now we would winds look to be NW becoming W. Winds back to the SW after Friday night, but by then 850 temps are 0 or above which would shut off the lake effect. As of right now I could see the POTENTIAL for lake snows SOUTH of Buffalo but not much for the metro area. But like I said, it’s still very early and we shouldn’t even be worrying about this right now. We have almost a whole week of weather to get through before than. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the weather!

  24. Devin says:

Lake Erie SURFACE water temps closing in on freezing now.Sitting at 33.4F.After tonight they will likley be at freezing.

  25. Josh Budde says:

Its 18F here in Albion and with wind at about 10 MPH, its go to be easily between 0 and 3 degrees.

  27. Devin says:

18 is rather warm. The BUF airport is down to 11 with many of the suburbs in the single digits. I’m sitting at 6.6 degrees in Amherst,NY.

  28. Sled Hill John says:

    Devin,
NWS has the water temp. at 38. Thats at 30 ft deep at the mouth of the river. What are the chances the winds will churn the water so the surface temp. goes up before it starts to freeze? It’s way too early for the lake to freeze now. I don’t want to have to rely on clippers and noreasters to get snow.

  29. Devin says:

John I’m honestly not sure at all about the chances of the lake to upwell.Lake Erie is a rather shallow lake So lake Erie doesn’t really upwell too much. And with Nor’Easters we don’t tend to get much if any snow form them because they are along the coast.

  30. Devin says:

If this cold pattern persist you can probably expect the lake to BEGIN freezing in about 2 weeks. It will take much longer for it to freeze completely (if at all)

  31. Sled Hill John says:

    Thanks Devin

  32. Sled Hill John says:

    Pearl jamming nick,
    You out there?

  33. Sled Hill John says:

    Thanks Josh Budd,
I have an Avatar. For those of you who havn’t seen this pic yet, it was last years sled hill. About 12-13 feet high in the Avatar.

  34. OP Tony says:

Doesn’t it seem like this winter, along with the past few winters, we’ve been going through extreem swings in daytime highs? With every arctic blast there seems to be an equally powerful rebound in warmth.
It looks like the transition back to cold begins late WED. Wed through Monday looks interesting as far as LES potential, a deep low will lift NE and bring in behind it the classic cold front, however the air mass looks like it’s going to be very dry which I believe lessens the LES? With the SE flow so rapid it is going to allow for high pressure to move back in again rather quickly. Looks like best time for big lake snow is mid thursday into evening. They are predicting the classic “multiple bands’ to set up with the direction of wind being from the NW. Looks like the temperature rollercoaster returns over the weekend with another big hit of warm air.
